WEEK 7 DAY 6: WORSHIP PREPARATION

 DAY 6: PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

MEMORY VERSE: “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”   John  4:24

When real, genuine authentic worship takes place - God will be glorified, not man. God will be set apart and exalted and glorified! Worship is like any other successful venture. It requires thought and preparation and I want to use another acrostic to show you how we can best prepare for true worship.

W-O-R-S-H-I-P = a heart thing!

W = a willing heart - I Chronicles 28:9

O = an obedient heart - I Peter 3:13-15

R = a reverent heart - Psalm 89:7

S = a sincere heart - Joshua 24:14

H = an honorable heart - Isaiah 58:13

I = an individual, that’s you! - Matthew 4:10

P = a prayerful heart - Psalm 5:2

WEEK 7 DAY 5: WORSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE

 DAY 5: WORSHIP > A WAY OF LIFE

MEMORY VERSE: “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”   John 4:24

Pastor and author John MacArthur says that “worship is all that we are, reacting rightly, to all that God is.” That statement means that we do not just worship God on Sundays; we are to worship God every day. And then, collectively, believers gather on Sundays to worship Him together as the Body of Christ!

Worship doesn’t occur in a vacuum, nor is it stimulated by artificial gimmickry. We, as truly converted believers, have the opportunity to worship God anywhere, anytime we are led to do so. You don’t have to be in a building and it doesn’t have to be listening to a certain kind of music. You can worship God as you read your Bible. At the birth of a new baby. Or when God makes you aware of something He has done especially for you. 

Or driving down the road. 

Assembling on Sundays is an extension of our daily worship of the Lord. True worship is the heart felt response of a soul to the truth of God. When the Word dominates and penetrates and permeates your life --- the worship of God is an automatic response! Real worship is a lifetime commitment!

WEEK 7 DAY 4: NEW TESTAMENT WORSHIP

 DAY 4: WORSHIP IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

MEMORY VERSE: “

As we have seen, worship is not an option. It is commanded by God Himself. In Matthew 4:10 Jesus said “you shall worship the Lord your God and Him only you shall serve.” Here Jesus is actually quoting a verse from the Old Testament : Deuteronomy 6:13. The foundation for all true worship is based on redemption. Christ seeks to redeem us that we might return to the purpose for which we were originally intended and that is to worship God!

The primary purpose of redemption is not that we merely escape Hell but that we might enjoy the manifold blessings of a holy God. The greatest of all those blessings is the worship of God.

In Matthew 14:25-33 the disciples were rescued from a stormy sea and please note in 14:33 that they “worshiped” Him.

After the resurrection when the disciples saw Jesus just before He ascended into heaven -- Matthew 28:17 -- it says “and when they saw Him they worshiped Him.”

WEEK 7 DAY 3: OLD TESTAMENT WORSHIP

 DAY THREE: WORSHIP IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

MEMORY VERSE: “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”   John 4:24

In the Old Testament, worship was a central focus for the people of God. It permeated every aspect of their lives. One great example was the design and construction of the Tabernacle. Details for the construction and use of the Tabernacle is found in Exodus chapters 25-27 and 35-40!

That Tabernacle was designed only for the worship of Jehovah God. It was the place where God met with His people. It was the dwelling place of God. It was the place where the High Priest made atonement for the sins of the people. It was where blood was placed on the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Holies. The Israelites did not go to the Tabernacle to be entertained. They did not sit down. They went there for one purpose only and that was to worship God! To use it for any other purpose would have been considered blasphemy.

Geographically, the Tabernacle was set in the middle of their encampment and was the center of all things. It was the pivotal focus of their lives. Worship was THE priority in the life of an Israelite! And it should be in our lives as well. Read I Chronicles 16:29; Nehemiah 8:6; Psalm 95:6

WEEK 7 DAY 2 A DEFINITION OF WORSHIP

 DAY # 2: A DEFINITION OF WORSHIP

Concepts are easier and more manageable than specific definitions. Yesterday was the concept. Today is the definition. 

Worship is “honor and adoration that is directed toward God alone.” It comes from an old English word “worth-ship” and is concerned with dignity, worthiness and attributes of someone. In the verb form, it means to “pay homage, to show respect, to express gratitude or to give honor to someone.” That someone is God Himself!

When we come together as the people of God, we gather to give Him honor, to offer Him our gratitude, to affirm our adoration and love for who He is as God. In the Old Testament worship means “to bow down, to reverence, to fall down, to prostrate ourselves, to beseech humbly the Lord.” 

The New Testament uses three different words for worship. The primary word is “proskuneo” which means to kiss the hand, to bow down. It is the expression of an attitude filled with awe and respect. That is the word used in the John 4 passage.

We come to worship in order to give God honor, respect, gratitude, glory and adoration.We bow before Him and acknowledge our gratitude and dependence on Him!

 DAY 1: THE MISSING JEWEL IN CHURCH

MEMORY VERSE 

Psalm 29:2 says “Give unto the LORD the glory due His name; and worship the LORD in the beauty of His holiness.” Here the Psalmist declares that the divine purpose of man is to worship the Lord. Man was created to glorify God. Yet, we seem as if we know very little about worship. 

Worship for many believers is focused around some kind of mysterious idea of God. But there should be no mystery to worship. It is ordained by God and His Word is full of information and instruction about how we should obey this important commandment! When you search the Word, you will find endless sources from which to draw.

The concept of worship is woven throughout the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. There, in the final book of the Bible, we find time and history coming to a close and the doors of eternity are swung wide open --- there we see multitudes of people worshipping and praising God for all eternity!

In John 4:20-24 the word “worship” is used eight times. Jesus Christ Himself knew the priority of worship. And when we finish this seven day study, we will know as well. A. W. Tozer called worship “the missing jewel in the evangelical church.”
