WEEK 6 DAY 7 SUMMARY & REVIEW

WEEK SIX: THE CHURCH

DAY # 7: REVIEW AND SUMMARY

MEMORY VERSE:

Well…one more week down and we have covered a lot of material in week six as we have talked about the importance of the church.  So, I have a few questions for you today:

What does the word “ecclesia” mean?

Who is the founder and builder of the church?

What has the church been called to do?  (4 things)

Why are you excited about the future of the church?

Why is the choosing of a church so important?

Could you provide Scripture references for the above?

WEEK 6 DAY 6

 DAY # 6: CHOOSING A CHURCH

MEMORY VERSE:

Choosing a church is a very difficult decision. Many people consider different factors in making that choice:

Location of the church?

Size of the church?

Number of Ministers?

Denominational affiliation of the church?

Ministries of the church?

Meeting times?

All those things are important but there is one thing that is absolutely critical: do they believe that the Bible is the inerrant, infallible, inspired, eternal, sufficient and authoritative Word of God? Is the Bible itself taught and preached at that particular church? And you have to attend to find out! If it isn’t, then I would not attend that church! Run from it as fast as you can!

What do they teach about God? Christ? Holy Spirit? Salvation? Trinity? These things are highly important and should influence your decision on which church to join. To be a Biblical church they must teach and preach the Bible. That is what Jesus did.

The church of the Lord Jesus Christ has a past, a present and a glorious future. The Bible talks about that future in various New Testament passages. What about the future of the church? Where are we headed? What is the end game? How will all this play itself out? Want to know your future as a believer?

A rapture – I Thessalonians 4:13-18

A resurrection – I Thessalonians 4:13-18

A reunion – I Thessalonians 4:13-18

A reward – I Corinthians 3:8-15 & II Corinthians 5:10

A reign – II Timothy 2:12; Revelation 1:6

WEEK 6 DAY 4

DAY # 4: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE CHURCH

MEMORY VERSE:

Believers in Jesus Christ have been called not only to be something but also to do something. The church, the local fellowship of believers, provides us with many opportunities to do just that:

A Place of Worship > Church is not a building but a gathering of all true believers to praise and worship our great God. What an honor true worship is!

A Place of Fellowship > The assembly of God’s people provides us with an opportunity to love, encourage and support one another in all of life’s challenges.

A Place of Instruction > A place to be instructed from the precious Word of God. A place where our souls are fed and nourished. A place where we learn more and more about our gracious God.

A Place of Service > God’s people are called to be servants. Jesus callus us to serve, not just sit and soak. We are to be disciples and make disciples in and through the church. We are to serve God using our spiritual gifts.

Is this the fellowship you have in your church? “THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATION”

WEEK 6 DAY 3

 WEEK SIX: THE CHURCH

DAY # 3: THE FUNCTION OF THE CHURCH

MEMORY VERSE: “ … and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.”    Matthew 16:18

The church’s foundation is our Lord Jesus Christ. We are called to function as the very Body of Christ. Our function is to exalt Him, honor Him and worship Him because of who He is and what He has done.

I Peter 2:9-10 describe this function quite clearly. In that passage the church is called:

A chosen race

A royal priesthood

A chosen generation

A people for His own possession

It says He has “called” us out of darkness into His marvelous light AND that we are to proclaim the praises and excellencies of the One who has done that for us.

Check out I Peter 3:15 ---what does it say about the will of God for our lives?

I Thessalonians 4:7 says we are called unto …. what?

WEEK 6 DAY 2 THE FOUNDER

 WEEK SIX: THE CHURCH

DAY # 2: THE FOUNDER OF THE CHURCH

MEMORY VERSE: “… and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.”    Matthew 16:18

The Greek word for church is “ecclesia” from which we get our English word “ecclesiology.” Or “eccelesiastical.”  It literally means those who have been called out from among. Hence, the called out ones. God has called us out of a lost world of sinners and placed us into the Body of Christ. We are the church. We have been called out and set apart by the Lord Himself.

The very first time “ecclesia” is used in the New Testament is found in the passage we are using for our memory verse.

The Church is built upon the rock (the truth of Peter’s confession). That Jesus Christ is the Rock, the foundation. The Son of the Living God. Upon that truth, Jesus will build His church! Jesus is the Founder and the Foundation. (I Corinthians 3:11)

The Church actually began in the mind and purpose of God before time began. See II Timothy 1:8-9. Prophesied by Jesus in Matthew 16 and finding its historical fulfillment at Pentecost in Acts 2.

The Church belongs to Jesus. He is its Founder! “Only Jesus Can Satisfy Your Soul”

WEEK 6 DAY 1 THE CHURCH

WEEK SIX: THE CHURCH, GOD’S CALLED OUT PEOPLE

DAY # 1: THE CHURCH

MEMORY VERSE: …”and on this rock, I will build my church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.”    Matthew 16:18

A person who has been truly converted should have a genuine desire to be part of a Bible-teaching and Bible-preaching church! We must point all Christians to the Church for it is there where God has deposited His truth and it is there where His people gather for worship and training.

Read Ephesians 3:9-11:

The purpose of the church is to do what?

And to whom is this truth revealed?

Even angels do not know of God’s plans for His church. They are learning of this plan as they watch through time. The church is people, God’s called out people, and is a living organism. It is composed of believers from all over the world.

The “mystery” is seen in Colossians 1:27 – Christ in us, the hope of glory!

Church attendance = with benefits  --- is seen in Hebrews 10:24-25!
