JESUS IS THE ANOINTED ONE
TEXT: “One of the two who heard John speak was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah (which is the Christ).”
John 1:40-41
Messiah = the anointed One
Messiah = the Christ, the Chosen
For centuries Jews had longed for the coming of the Messiah. They yearned for a King and leader who would drive the Romans out and set up his own kingdom and they would rule and reign with Him. Every Jewish woman wanted a man child, with the hope that he would be that special messiah.
When Jesus came, most of the Jews missed him because of wrong expectations. Jesus came not as a King but as a shepherd who would give His life for His sheep. He came not to rule and reign but to suffer and die for the sins of His people. He came to a cross not for a crown.
When Andrew found Jesus the very first thing he wanted to do was to find his brother, Simon Peter and tell him. Look back up at John 1:40-41.
Andrew proclaimed “We have found the Messiah, the anointed one, the promised one, the chosen one!”
