TEMPTATION #1

 TEMPTATION NUMBER  #1

TEXT: “the devil said to Him, if you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

Luke 4:3

Look again at Christ:

Led by the Spirit.

In a wilderness.

Forty days!

Temptation #1: If Jesus was the Son of God and truly had miraculous powers and was really hungry, then just turn the stones into bread. Don’t trust God to provide it. You do a miracle. You save yourself. Trust in bread more than you trust in God.

Let me hasten to say that this temptation is not comparing physical bread with spiritual bread. Christ was driven by the Spirit into the wilderness to be hungry and be humbled by it. Would Jesus live by faith or by sight? Would He survive by the omnipotent hand of God or by His own resources? That is what is at issue here.

What did Jesus do? What was His response? He said in Luke 4:4 that “man shall not live by bread alone.” Matthew adds in his account that Jesus said further “but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” This was a direct quotation from Deuteronomy 8:3.

Live by the promises of God!

Live by the truth of God!

Live by the very power of God!

Here, Jesus learned obedience by patient endurance and suffering. (Hebrews 5:8)
