THE SACRIFICE OF JESUS

 THE SACRIFICE OF JESUS

TEXT: “How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit, offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”  Hebrews 9:14

This passage speaks to the truth of Jesus offering Himself to God. This fact cannot be denied by just a plain reading of the text. But the verse also addresses the legality of that offering.

To be a legitimate sacrifice, Jesus had to be without spot or blemish. According to Mosaic law, the sacrifice could have no defects whatsoever. (See Exodus 12). Not just any lamb would do. It had to meet the special requirements of no defects and no blemishes.

Jesus lived in perfect obedience to the Law.

He met all the specific requirements of the Law.

He Himself was sinless, without defect and without any blemish.

He who knew no sin, became sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.  So says II Corinthians 5:21.

Jesus the sinless One became Jesus the offered One as He went willingly to the cross. He who knew No sin became “the greatest sinner who ever was, by imputation.” Back up and read that again...slowly. God placed our sins on Him. He became our sin and His righteousness was imputed to our account. This is the great judicial exchange of the cross! What a bargain for us! That is grace!
