TEMPTATION NUMBER TWO
TEXT: “And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time and said to him, to you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I will give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.”
Luke 4:5-7
What a liar Satan was.
It wasn’t his to begin with.
What a deceiver! He gave Jesus an either/or proposition.
Would Jesus be God’s Messiah by following the path of suffering, even to the death of the cross OR would Jesus be Satan’s Messiah by simply bowing down to him and worshipping the devil?
And not have to go to the Cross?
Which path was easier?
Which way would have been less painful?
Luke 4:8 “And Jesus said to him, it is written, you shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.” This, by the way, is a quotation from Deuteronomy 6:13. Please note that Jesus used the truth of the Old Testament to overcome Satan in the wilderness!
There was no doubt which path was easier. But for the Christian, the path to glory is always the way of suffering and serving and persevering. It is an agonizing way and it is narrow. But it leads to glory and eternity with the Lord. Remember that as you confront and combat sin!
