Those people who know me well know that I love good music. I love different kinds of music and I believe that all music is really a gift of God. Music is good for the soul and the heart and the mind. Music can do many things:
It can lift our spirits.
It can comfort and console us.
It can be a place of refuge during times of trial.
It can encourage us.
It can express what is in our hearts.
It can touch us deeply.
Music, like all of God’s gifts, can be abused and mis-used. For example, it is possible to confuse “feelings” with the truth. Music may make you feel good but does it help you to do good and be good? Music can inspire but does it produce obedience and faithfulness to God’s Word?
However, Jesus and the Word of God is always better than music. Why is that so?
1. The Giver is always better than the gift!
2. Eternal comfort is always better than temporary comfort.
3. Truth is more powerful than a tune.
4. Actual unity is better than just feelings of unity.
5. Only Jesus can save.
6. Only the Holy Spirit can convict of sin, righteousness and judgment.
Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
